Stress and High Blood Pressure

February 16th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Do you know that your blood pressure can varies throughout the day and it depends on the activities you are doing and your state of emotion? If you are experiencing a lot of stress in your daily life, you are having twice the risk of getting high blood pressure compared to others who are leading a less stressful life.

Why? The reason is that your adrenal glands released large amounts of stress hormone, which is also known as cortisol, when you are suffering from either short or long term stress. Similiar to adrenaline, cortisol levels increases when a person is under stress.

It is noted that if a person is under stress consistently, its cortisol levels will also be increased on a consistent basis. This is not good for your health and may lead to other serious health problems such as high blood pressure, depression or even cancer.

To “eliminate” stress, people might turn to smoking, heavy drinking and over-eating. All these will cause your blood pressure to increase. It is best if you can make some changes to your lifestyle so that your stress levels can be reduced which in turn can help you to control and lower your blood pressure in the long run.
