Spices That Lower Blood Pressure
When you have high blood pressure, you often have to cut down on or omit certain elements of your diet, and one of the most common elements is salt. Too much sodium is bad for your cholesterol, so it’s crucial not to consume too much of it; the recommended amount of sodium per day is 1500 mg, which is a little more than a teaspoon of salt.
So you might be wondering then how you can remove salt from your diet and still keep your food flavorful. Well, there are many great alternatives that I’m happy to tell you about. There are a number of different choices to choose from, including herbs, spices, and other alternatives. And best of all, there’s evidence that suggests that these are herbs and spices that lower high blood pressure.
Some common spices that you can use in place of salt are black pepper, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, chili powder, curry powder, nutmeg, and cayenne pepper. Cayenne pepper is especially known for reducing LDL, or “bad” cholesterol. You can also use saffron, which contains a chemical called crocetin which helps lower blood pressure. It should be noted that saffron can be expensive though. It should also be noted that if you have ulcers or colitis, you should probably refrain from using either black or cayenne pepper, as they can cause acid buildup in the stomach.
White Coat Hypertension
White coat hypertension is defined as when a person has unusually high blood pressure during a doctor’s visit. This condition is seen in both patients who have normal or low blood pressure and ones who have high blood pressure or hypertension.
White coat hypertension can cause problems if unrecognized, as it could lead to a false diagnosis of hypertension. It can also be a warning sign of cardiovascular disease, as people with white coat hypertension tend to have the same types of structural irregularities in their hearts and blood vessels as people with high blood pressure.

At this time, there’s still debate about whether attempts should be made to treat white coat hypertension. For now though, if you have this condition, it’s important that you tell your doctor about it. The causes of white coat hypertension are still somewhat unknown, although anxiety over having to visit the doctor is often given as one, as well as not properly taking your blood pressure medication.

Causes of Fluctuating Blood Pressure
Fluctuating blood pressure is something that happens to everyone, and can occur due to a variety of conditions such as what position a person is in (are they sitting down? standing? lying down), what time of the day it is, the size and tightness of the pressure cuff used during a doctor’s visit, and so on.
However, when you have high blood pressure, the periods when your blood pressure is high can cause some problems, especially if your diastolic pressure (aka the lower number in a blood pressure reading) is constantly above 90 (a person qualifies as having high blood pressure if their blood pressure is 140/90 or higher).

There’s not much doctors can do though about fluctuating blood pressure, as while a number of factors such as obesity, unhealthy diet, family history, age, inactivity, and race (African-Americans are more likely to develop high blood pressure than other races) can contribute to increasing one’s risk of getting high blood pressure, the causes for it are still unknown.
At best, the doctor can only monitor your blood pressure for possible causes and to determine at what times during the day and night the blood pressure peaks. In some cases, fluctuating blood pressure can be brought about either by taking a new medication, or by taking one that doesn’t last for twenty-four hours.
The best solution I would recommend if you have this problem is to continuously monitor your blood pressure. People with high blood pressure are usually supposed to have their blood pressure monitored once a month by a doctor, but if your blood pressure is fluctuating a good deal, he or she will probably have you keep track of it three times a day in the morning, afternoon, as well as at night.
It’s recommended that the first monitoring time be in the morning after you just wake up and before you take your blood pressure medication or eat or drink anything. I’m going to stress again that if you have fluctuating high blood pressure, you should definitely see your doctor, because the periods where your blood pressure is at its highest puts you at the same risk level for strokes and heart attacks as someone with uncontrolled high blood pressure.

Morning High Blood Pressure – What You Can Do About It
Like many people, blood pressure runs on a daily schedule: it gets up in the morning with you, gets more active during the day, and finally, at night, it gets tired and goes to sleep. As you sleep, your blood pressure decreases until you wake up again.
And while this isn’t a problem for someone with normal or low blood pressure, it can be one for people who have high blood pressure, as it can bring about high blood pressure-related side effects such as dizziness or nausea.

There are a number of factors that can cause morning high blood pressure, including sleep apnea, certain medications, kidney disease, stress, working night shifts, tobacco and caffeine use, and of course, having high blood pressure but not taking measures to control it. Certain blood pressure medications can also cause high blood pressure to occur in the morning, as some of them don’t last a full twenty-four hours.
Dark Chocolate to Lower Blood Pressure
One more reason to eat the dark stuff: A piece of dark chocolate everyday can help to lower your blood pressure. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association randomly assigned 44 adults diagnosed with hypertension to eat a piece of dark or white chocolate (one block of a 16-piece. 100g bar) daily for 18 weeks.
After the study period, researchers discovered that the participants’ average blood pressure had decreased and the cases of hypertension declined to 68%. Serum biomarkers credit the improvement to dark chocolate, suggesting that it lowers blood pressure by decreasing nitric oxide production (an essential component for blood flow regulation), hence dilating blood vessels.
